Athletic Trainers
Head Athletic Trainer
Samantha Matuszewski, ATC
The day-to-day operations of the IMSA Sports Medicine staff are carried out by a certified and licensed athletic trainer. An athletic trainer is an allied healthcare professional that specializes in the prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses associated with physical activity. Certified Athletic Trainers work under the supervision of a licensed physician. A wide variety of services are available to students and staff: injury/medical evaluation, cryotherapy, thermotherapy, electrotherapies (interferential and hi-volt), ultrasound, therapeutic exercise, preventative taping/bracing, wound care, emergency care, and referral to appropriate specialists.
In the fall of 2012, IMSA became a clinical education site for the Aurora University Athletic Training Education Program. Aurora University students pursing a degree in Athletic Training and eventual credentialing with the Board of Certification assist the Sports Medicine Staff in day-to-day operations. Their assistance allows them opportunities for hands-on learning as well as application of clinical knowledge and skills.

Team Physician
The IMSA team physician is a sports medicine fellow and orthopedic surgeon with the Fox Valley Orthopedics group. The team physician provides the medical oversight for the sports medicine staff. In addition, the team physician serves as the second tier of care for the IMSA athlete, student, or staff. Our team physician provides access to these services: orthopedic evaluation within 48-72 hours, X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, casting, orthopedic surgical procedures, and physical therapy referral.
Physician Assistant
Our physician assistant is a member of our team physician's staff. Physician Assistants are health professionals who practice medicine as members of a team with their supervising physicians. PAs deliver a broad range of medical and surgical services to diverse populations in rural and urban settings. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and prescribe medications.
Physical Therapists
Since sports medicine services are provided by Athletico Physical Therapy, the athletic trainer can help to refer members of the IMSA community to any of their over 300 clinics throughout northern Illinois as well as our increasing number downstate. The facility managers and their staffs provide a third tier of care for IMSA. Various clinics provide even more specific specialties within physical therapy such as ASTYM/Graston, Active Release Technique, Vestibular therapy, video biomechanical analysis, and many more.
